If you have time, and the sites are accessible, it's a good idea to scout the locations so you know what you are doing when you actually shoot.

Scouting locations can also be a good practice exercise for a community media youth group.

Instead of going out with cameras, use cardboard sheets with aspect ratio (4:3 NTSC) cutouts and notebooks. Have the youth describe their shots in brief paragraphs. You could continue the exercise later with storyboards.

At any rate, scouting of locations should be followed by preparing shot lists.
